"Consider Yourself Asked"

As you may have heard on radio and television, the Red Cross blood supplies throughout the country -- and particularly in northern New England -- are critically low. The major factors contributing to this very low supply of blood products are more use (chronic illnesses, cancer treatments) and natural disasters (tornadoes, floods).
The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Auxiliary (volunteers) have stepped up their efforts to help the American Red Cross obtain more blood donations this summer. They will be hosting 2 blood drives:

Friday, July 30  3PM-8 PM
Tuesday, August 31  9AM-2PM
DHMC, Lebanon, NH

To schedule an appointment,
Email
Volunteer.Services@Hitchcock.org
Or call
603-650-7056

Please bring a photo ID or 2 other forms of identification. The minimum age for blood donation is 17 years. There is no longer an upper age limit. If you have a question as to whether or not a medication you are taking will prohibit you from donating blood, please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543). Please consider being a real hero this summer and save lives by donating blood.

Need Help Paying for Prescriptions?

Vermont is committed to helping Vermonters get the health care they need. You may qualify for help with prescription drugs if you have no prescription insurance and:

  • You're 65 or older, or
  • You have a disability and get Medicare or Social Security disability benefits
  • And your family income is below a certain amount.
Don't just assume you don't qualify. There are a variety of programs, all with different rules.
VHAP-Pharmacy helps you pay for drugs for both short-term and long-term medical problems, and you pay only a few dollars for each prescription. Eyeglasses and related eye exams are also covered. If your income is too high for VHAP-Pharmacy, you may qualify for V-Script.
V-Script helps you pay for drugs for long-term medical problems. The amount you pay varies depending on your income.
You don't even have to leave home to apply! Just call 1-800-250-8427 (the agency formerly known as PATH: VT Department of Prevention, Assistance, Transition and Health Access) and ask for an application for the pharmacy programs. If you're not sure how to fill out the forms, they can help you right over the phone, or call Melanie at the Bugbee Senior Center. Within 30 days after filing the application, you will receive a letter telling you if you're eligible for help.
For more information, come to Bugbee Senior Center on Tuesday, August 10th, at 12:30 pm to hear a presentation by Erica Perry.

Apply Now for Fuel Assistance

Vermont's Fuel Assistance Program helps low-income Vermonters pay for a part of their winter home heating bills. To participate, you need to apply by the end of August to get full benefits. You can apply up until the last day of February; however, the later you apply, the later your benefit will be issued and the benefit amount may be smaller.
If you applied last year, you will automatically be mailed a new application.  If you did not apply last year, you can get an application by calling the Fuel Office at 1-800-479-6151. If you need help filling out the application or have any questions about the program, call Melanie at the Center (295-9068).
