Food & Blood-thinning Drugs
Coumadin (warfarin) blocks the effects of vitamin K on the proteins in the blood to prevent the formation of blood clots. If you take this medication, you need to know which foods contain vitamin K as you may need to limit some of them.
Eat no more than 1 serving per day of these foods that are high in vitamin K: Kale, turnip greens, Swiss chard, spinach (cooked), beet greens, parsley, and legumes (black, kidney, pinto and garbanzo beans). Eat no more than 3 servings per day of these foods which are moderately high in vitamin K: asparagus, Brussels sprouts, dark green lettuce, broccoli, avocado, spinach (raw), cabbage (raw), lentils.
A high protein diet can significantly decrease the effects of Coumadin so be sure to consult with your doctor before starting any extreme diet.
Excessive consumption of green tea can also decrease its effect. Limit green tea to 2 cups per day.
Cranberry and grapefruit juices can increase the blood-thinning effect of Coumadin so use them sparingly. More than 2 or 3 alcoholic drinks a day can also increase its effects.
Many dietary supplements and herbal medications can alter the effects of Coumadin, so be sure to check with your doctor before using any of them.
