Looking For Bridge Players

We have a small group of loyal bridge players who gather at Bugbee Senior Center on Friday afternoons to play contract bridge. They are looking for other bridge players to join them. There is no cost and all experience levels are  welcome. If you are interested, please call the Center at 295-9068. (It is not necessary to sign up, but sometimes bridge is cancelled if there are not enough players.)

Calling Former Telephone Operators
Wednesday, Feb. 17  12:45

Mary Nadeau of the Hartford Historical Society is asking former phone operators to come in with any photographs you have of the phone company in White River Jct., either at work or social events. The Historical Society is putting together a program for their June 9th meeting.

Do You Remember 1961?

More specifically, especially if you are or were a Hartford resident at that time, do you remember the "200th birthday celebrations" that were held in August of that year? The churches in town held special programs on Sunday, August 13th, and on Friday, August 18th, there was a songfest at the high school (now White River     Elementary School), followed by  dancing on the Municipal Building lawns, then fireworks. The weekend was full of special events. On Saturday, there was a big parade, a field day at Watson field and an evening ball; on Sunday, a chicken barbeque at the high school, followed by a middle school art show. The libraries had special exhibits and were open all weekend.
The Hartford Historical Society is making plans for Hartford's 250th birthday in July, 2011, and they are looking for photographs and other memorabilia from the 200th birthday celebration, as well as souvenirs from the 150th birthday celebration in 1911. They also are looking for Hartford residents who would like to participate in planning.
For more information, contact Pat Stark (295-3077) or email pstark@hartford-vt.org.

Mardi Gras!
"Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler"
("Let the Good Times Roll")
Thursday, Feb. 18th

Traditionally, Mardi Gras takes place the day before Ash Wednesday. However, our Mardi Gras celebration will take place the day after Ash Wednesday because that's when MJ Slattery and Andy Stewart are available to perform for us   during lunch. They have performed their repertoire of cajun music here before, and we feel they are definitely worth the wait!
In addition to great entertainment and jambalaya, we'll provide an opportunity for you to create a mask and, perhaps, participate in some other Mardi Gras related activities, starting at 10:00. So wear green, purple and gold and come to the Center on Thursday, Feb. 18th, to "let the good times roll"!
