Do You Have "Type 2 Diabetes?"

Do you experience any of the following symptoms?

  • Unusual thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Extreme fatigue

  • Irritability
  • "Tingling" or "numbness" in hands or feet

Diabetes is a disease that affects the body's ability to produce or respond to insulin, a hormone that is produced in the pancreas to help blood glucose get into the cells of the body where it is used to produce energy. When glucose builds up in the blood, it may damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.
People who are over age 45, overweight, have high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol and who have a sedentary lifestyle may face an increased risk of "Type 2" Diabetes. Diabetes can be controlled by paying close attention to diet, exercise and maintaining normal body weight. Type 2 Diabetes, if not controlled, can lead to serious complications.
For more information, come to Bugbee Senior Center on Wed., June 18, at 12:30 to hear a presentation by Rita O'Dell, Diabetes Educator/Coordinator at DHMC.
