Tips For a Safe Trip
National Crime Prevention Council
Traveling for business or pleasure?
Follow these tips for a safe trip.

  • Carry minimum luggage.
  • Be sure your luggage can be locked.
  • Never leave your luggage unattended in public places (airport, bus terminal, restaurant, etc.)
  • Leave important non-travel papers, such as your social security card and local credit cards, at home.
  • If traveling outside the USA, photocopy all documents (passport, credit cards, tickets)   before leaving home and store copies in the hotel safe.
  • Use travel's checks and credit cards instead of cash whenever possible.
  • Don't look vulnerable or lost. Walk with a purpose and stay alert to what's happening around you. Carry as few items as possible.
  • Ask the hotel about the safety of the neighborhood and which areas to avoid.
  • Obtain advance information on cities -- use maps and guides. Ask the bellman at the hotel for directions and costs before taking a cab.
  • For women: try to keep important things in suits with pockets; purses are too easy to lose or steal.
Car Safety Checklist: Be Safe on the Road.
  • Keep your car well-maintained and your gas tank at least half-full at all times.
  • Always keep your car locked, whether you are in or out of it.
  • Stow packages and valuables in the trunk, not in plain view. Keep mail and other items with your name and address on them out of sight.
  • Get your keys out before you get to your car. Check around the vehicle and inside for anyone hiding. If you see people "hanging around" or if something feels wrong, go back to a safe place and call for help.
  • If you think you are being followed or if you're ever "bumped" by another driver under suspicious circumstances, head for a busy, lighted area-- a 24-hour gas station or police or fire station that's staffed around the clock. Don't go home.

Fundraising Updates

We were very pleased with our "teaser" book sale at Dothan Brook School on Saturday, March 19th (rescheduled from March 12th due to snow). We brought in $480 from the sale of books and $31 in quilt raffle ticket sales. Best of all, it provided a great opportunity to get the word out about our bigger book sale in April.     Eleanor Smith and Margaret Fortier deserve a great big "thank you" for helping out with this sale!

Our "huge" book sale on April 16th and 17th was indeed a huge success!  It was very well attended and brought in $2,005.70!  Before we put the remaining inventory away, the sales totaled $2200.20! We thank Cliff Avery, Eleanor Smith, Maggie Fortier, Jodee Lee, Vicky Moran and Elsie Benson for all their help.

The Lion's Club breakfast was also a big success and we thank them for their on-going support.  Cris Ellis of South Hadley, MA, was the lucky winner of the quilt.
