Correction:

The Senior Advocate at the Bugbee Senior Center is Melanie Ferrell. Her name was incorrectly listed in the April Bugbee Bulletin. (This just proves " Barker's Proof": Proofreading is more effective after publication!)

Buy Fuel Wisely
(from VT Attorney General's            Consumer Fraud Alert Calendar)

The recent rise in fuel prices makes it important for consumers to buy their oil and propane wisely.
Consider these tips:

  • Fuel prices are not regulated, but many fuel dealers offer two ways to save on the price per gallon, typically starting in the summer: pre-buy (where a chosen quantity of fuel is purchased up front at a set price) and fixed-price (where the price is capped but will not drop).
  • Insist on a written description of any pre-buy or fixed-price program so that you know, among other things, the date on which the set/capped price will end.
  • In Vermont, the sale of liquid propane gas (but not heating oil or other fuels) is regulated by the   Attorney General's Office with    respect to disconnections, minimum delivery, security deposits, delivery fees, credit practices,   discrimination and related       matters.
  • Comparison shop for the best price on fuel.
  • Companies should not be adding "environmental", "regulatory compliance" or similar fees on top of the per-gallon price of fuel.
If you live in Vermont and have a  problem with a fuel dealer, you may call the Consumer Assistance         Program at 1-800-649-2424.

"2-1-1"  Help Line
to Expand in Vermont

Since February, 2005, Health and Human Services       information has been available in Vermont by dialing 2-1-1. At the present time, this telephone is manned by a specialist from 8 AM to 8 PM, Monday through Thursday, and 8 AM to 4:30PM      Fridays.  Because the number of calls has doubled since the start of the service, officials hope to expand the   service to 24 hours a day.
2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember 3-digit system (like 9-1-1) that makes a connection between people seeking services or  volunteer opportunities and community organizations or  government agencies.  VT 2-1-1 is a program of United Ways of Vermont, funded by individual United Ways statewide, the VT Agency of Human Services, and grants from local foundations.
