Opt Out (or In) of Prescreened Offers

Are you tired of receiving multiple offers for "pre-approved" credit cards and insurance policies in your mailbox? Not only can they be annoying "junk mail", they can put you at risk for identity theft. If identity thieves intercept these offers, and have the right additional information, they can   apply for credit in your name.
If you want to halt these offers, you can do so by going to www.optoutprescreen.com or by calling 1-888-567-8688. You can choose whether you want to permanently opt-out or opt out only for 5 years.
At the website, you will be asked to provide your name, address, social  security number, date of birth and  telephone number. While we usually warn you not to give out these numbers, in this  instance we feel it is safe.  OptOutPrescreen.com is the official Consumer Credit Reporting Industry website to accept and process requests from consumers to opt-out (or opt-in) of firm offers of credit or insurance. After filling in the information online, you still need to print out the "opt-out election form", sign it and send it in.
If, on the other hand, you would like to receive offers for credit or insurance, you can use the same phone number or website to "opt in".

The Marble Game Returns!

By popular request, we will start a new Marble Game after lunch on Wednesday, Nov. 1st.
For those who might not be familiar with the Marble Game, here's the way it works: We start with 95 clear blue marbles and 5 red marbles in a can. Each day, we sell new tickets for 50¢ each. Half of the money goes to the Center; the other half goes into the "pot". Three tickets are drawn each day after lunch. Each lucky ticket holder will have an opportunity to pick a marble from the can. If a red marble is picked, the pot goes to the winner. If more than one red marble is picked, the pot is split among the winners. If only blue marbles are picked, the pot rolls over and continues to grow until a red marble is picked.
As the game progresses, the pot grows and the odds of winning increase because, as      marbles are picked out of the can, they are not put back in. The game will continue until all 5 red marbles have been picked.

Winter Driving Safety Tips
Adapted from The Weather Channel (www.weather.com) and the National Safety Council

Driving in the winter means, snow, sleet and ice that can lead to slower traffic, hazardous road conditions, hot tempers and unforeseen dangers. Here are some suggestions to make sure you and your vehicle are prepared.
Start with a complete check-up for your car, and a tune-up, if necessary. Be sure your tires are in good condition and appropriate for driving in winter conditions. Check the antifreeze and make sure you are using the proper weight oil. Check the level of windshield washer fluid and your wiper blades.
To make sure you are prepared for an emergency situation, you should carry the following items in your trunk:

  • Properly inflated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod-type jack. (Even if you can't change a tire yourself, someone might be able to do it for you if you have the right tools.)
  • Shovel
  • Jumper cables
  • Tow and tire chains
  • Bag of salt or cat litter
  • Tool kit
  • First Aid kit/Survival Kit (flashlight w/extra batteries, ice scraper, snow brush, waterproof matches, non-perishable high-energy foods, windshield washer fluid, wool blanket, extra mittens & hats)
